As the gym lights rise on a brand new volleyball season, anticipation and determination fill the air. With new faces stepping onto the court, the Lakeview girls’ volleyball team is starting a fresh season with new energy and determination on the court.
This year marks a significant transition for the team as they embark on a fresh start. With the graduation of 8 key seniors, the team is practically brand new, filled with mostly underclassmen and new players stepping up. While it’s a big change, the fresh lineup brings renewed energy and opportunity for growth. The returning players and newcomers are determined to build strong team chemistry and work hard to make this season a success. Though the experience gap is real, the team’s spirit and commitment to improvement set a promising tone for the months ahead.
The team is led by Coach Heather Kiser, who has reached her 10th season as a head coach for Lakeview. Kiser discusses this year’s goals and how they differ from previous years. “Our goals were to stay competitive and play as a team. Getting a new group of freshmen coming in and being in vital spots was a learning curve that took some time, but once we figured it out, we started making fewer errors. However, goals are always subject to reevaluation. Last year’s goals were two years in the making, probably longer to be honest. Those girls have all played together since 6th grade. That’s chemistry that can’t be taught. It was a different team, so goals vary team to team, year by year.”
Senior captain Ali Parise was very excited to answer the question, which game from the season stood out to you the most? The team had faced plenty of tough matchups, but for her, one game held special significance and showcased everything the team had worked for all year. Parise remembered how the pressure was on, especially since the opponent had handed them a tough loss earlier in the season. Knowing what was at stake, the team came together with a renewed sense of focus and determination.
Reflecting on this experience, Parise said, “ The game that stands out in my mind from this season so far is the South Range game at home. We all knew this game was going to be tough since we had lost to them before, yet we played together as a team and really played out hardest. This game was particularly important to everyone on the team because if we won, then we would have a chance at winning our conference. So, we all played smart and together. The game was really exciting, and I think it really got us ready to keep going strong.”
The junior varsity team goes first, bringing energy, determination, and a fresh burst of enthusiasm that sets the tone for the entire evening. The developing players are focused on building their skills and teamwork, laying the foundation for future success. The team is led by Heidi Kalafat, going into her 3rd as JV head coach.
Kalafat recognises JV’s play, discussing how crucial their energy is for the varsity team. “I think the way that JV plays impacts the remainder of the night because it not only sets the tone, but it can set the stage for the effort, energy, and attitude. Winning the first game feels amazing for everyone: the coaches, the crowd, and all the players. Positive momentum is very powerful and carries over. If JV plays flat, no excitement, and no energy, it can spread to the varsity game. Most importantly, no matter what team we are on, once we hit the court, we are all a representation of the Lakeview Bulldogs. We play with pride and with a sense of urgency.”
Looking ahead, the volleyball team is ready to carry this momentum into the next challenge. With each game, they not only refine their skills but also inspire those in the stands. If their recent performances are any indication, this is a team that is going to fight and find even greater limits.
