Over the past few weeks, the Boys Cross Country team have been dominating meets, even after the loss of 8 graduated seniors. They have been training almost everyday since July, and put in over 50 mile weeks to ensure that they have a strong season. The boys were dedicated to carry on the strong legacy left by the Class of 2025.
Additionally, the boys have been receiving extra assistance as one of the seniors came back to help them improve their training and mentality.
Alumni runner and assistant coach Luke Whitmore said, “The team means a lot to me, I do my best every practice and meet to not only motivate and build better runners but also develop bonds between teammates which does more for their overall performance and experience than people may realize.”
The first race was the War on the Shore in Ashtabula, and it presented a challenge as the two biggest obstacles were a giant hill and a sandy beach. However, the Bulldogs fought through it to become top finishers.
Junior runner, Hudson Lasher says, “It was an honor to lead my team in this race. Most people race to hit a certain time or beat a personal record. For me, the biggest prize is always seeing the demoralization in the face of the guy you’re beating.”
As the season continued, they began to race in smaller meets in the Suburban League. They faced off against schools such as Howland, Newton Falls, Champion, and Hubbard. These races allowed for several runners to work on their speed and kick at the end of the race. They ended up in 1st place at their meet at Newton Falls, with major improvements from everyone.
Sophomore runner, Thomas Rawl says, “Cross Country is a big part of my life. It makes me proud to see younger people getting into the sport because I know they will be great someday.”
The Bulldogs still have several races to go, but their determination has led them to achieve greatness after the strong legacy that came before them.
