The Lakeview High School boys golf team has been taking the courses with focus and determination for the game. Golf is usually viewed as a sport that is just played by individual people but for the Bulldogs, it has much more value and drive than that. The Bulldogs use their teamwork and are constantly improving their play in the game. As the season is near an end, their record stands at 9-3 which shows how capable they are with tough competition and still putting up a fight.
This year the Bulldogs have brought in a mix of returning and new players, eager to experience the new, fresh energy. Some of the newest additions to this year’s Bulldog’s team that are bringing a strong force to the tee’s are Carson Toth (Sophomore), Brandon Steele (Junior), and Luke Demsey (Junior). To the Bulldogs, everyone is a leader, and there is no specific person that they think has to get the job done. As Toth, Steele, and Demsey are the team’s new leaders on and off the course, they are challenged everyday as being young mentors of the team, but they don’t let the obstacles lower their resilience and adaptability for the game.
With the whole team facing a challenging schedule so far, Demsey is asked the question of what goals he has for the rest of his Junior season. Demsey answers, “My goal for the rest of the season is to progress and shoot at least four pars and a birdy per round, aiming for under a 45.”
Every match for the Bulldogs presents a new test and goal they aim for. Some of the courses they play demand precise hits and strokes on the ball. This upcoming Wednesday, September 17th, the Bulldogs will be fighting for the win at Squaw Creek for the league championship. Squaw Creek is one of these tough courses, but the teamwork and encouragement that the Bulldogs have will uplift each others spirits, providing the support they need for the match.
When it comes to the courses, there are many courses that the Bulldogs visit. Beyond all the challenges of all of the different courses, having a peaceful atmosphere to play at can overall help a player focus more on their game and push them to remain playing sharp and it also reminds them as to why they love playing their sport so much.
Steele is asked which course he feels like he plays the best at and likes the most out of all of the ones he has played at. He responds, “My favorite golf course I’ve ever played on is Avalon Lakes. It is my favorite course because it is maintained very well and the greens are always in great shape. Also, I like that the employees are very friendly to everyone.”
As there are a lot of new members of the Bulldogs Golf team this year, you can tell when you go to a match that the players are so fascinated with the game and how it is mixed with so many emotions like patience, skill, and focus. What started as something fun or just a hobby for these golfers became something they all enjoy and look forward to every year for the new season to come.
Toth talks about how he first got into golf and how he has been obsessed with it ever since. He says, “I first got into golf by going and playing with my brother and dad on Father’s Day two years ago. After that, I started playing more and more, and I thought it would be fun if I joined the golf team.”
Overall, the Bulldogs are continuing to show that their drive for success is more than just the scores shown when everything is over, but it all comes from their genuine love for the game. All together, the Bulldogs have built such a strong, competitive program and are making memories everyday of their season.
