Matt Baker is a math teacher who teaches 8th and 9th graders. Baker is one of the many new teachers who will occupy the building in the 2023-2024 school year. Baker is a graduate of Youngstown State University with a degree in Middle Childhood Education. Baker is not a new face in this building. Last year he was the Boys Junior Varsity Basketball coach and this year will become the Head Varsity Coach. Baker also was a substitute teacher teaching Geometry, Algebra 2, and Algebra 3 in the high school a few years prior. After a few years of teaching at the middle school, Baker is back and ready to adjust to the High School.
Many things are very exciting within Baker’s transfer to the high school. Students, teachers, and even his players are excited to see him in the high school. To speak on this transfer Baker and many of his students voiced their thoughts on his teachings and the transfer.
Baker elaborated on the transition as he said, “The Biggest thing is I don’t have to teach blocks anymore, classes are 30 minutes shorter here than in the Middle School.”
In the middle school instead of periods they have what are called “blocks” which are much longer than the periods we have in the high school.
Baker also stated that he is, “Very lucky to have AC in my room.”
Bakers room is one of the few who have Air conditioning in the school, in these beginning few weeks where the weather is extremely hot some days.
Lastly Baker said, “Excited to coach this year,” and also that he is “a lot closer to my players now.”
Baker who is becoming the newest Lakeview head coach is very excited and motivated to make this years team the best in the last few years. Communication is a very crucial part of being a head coach of any sport. Now he is closer to his players and communication will be that much easier for him and his players. Additionally many students speak very highly of Baker and his teaching style.
As Sienna Terry said, “I liked Mr Baker’s class because he was friendly and didn’t get too upset at people unless they kept breaking the rules. He also let us listen to music sometimes if we earned it or we were caught up.”
Friendly is just one of the many compliments his students give him.
As Jacob Liber stated, “Mr Baker is a great teacher and a great guy he always has something to keep us on task. In three short weeks I’ve learned a lot of new stuff and better ways to do things I already knew. He knows everyone, student of his or not, I’m sure you would not hear anything negative from anyone about Mr. Baker.”
Baker has left a positive impact on his students whether they had him in the middle school or just having the opportunity to be one of his students in the high school.
Lastly, Belle Campos says, “ I do not have Mr. Baker this year but I did last year. Last year Mr. Baker was really chill about things in his classroom. I really liked his music policy, which was if you asked and if you didn’t have a partner for the assignment then you could listen to music. Mr. Baker had a really open atmosphere to his class, if you needed help he would give you help.“
From Baker becoming the head coach to his students loving his teaching style everything is going great for the beginning of his first year as a high school teacher. The High School is excited to have Baker and everything he will do for us!
