Social Studies teacher Sean Voorhies recently transitioned from the new middle school building to the high school building. We’ve all had to transition from middle school to high school at some point in our lives. However, have you ever thought about if a teacher had to move from one building to another?
Well, I asked Voorhies himself about his experience on the transition and this is was he had to say, “The transition to the high school has been pretty good so far. I started out teaching in a high school for a few years, then I moved back to the middle school level for a long time. The staff here at the high school has been very helpful getting us acclimated to the different ways of doing things, and so forth. However, what I liked the most is reconnecting with former students who are all grown up. It’s a lot of fun seeing them stop by my room or running into them between classes. After they leave the middle school, those teachers don’t always get to see them again. So that is really cool. “
When I was in middle school, I remember that all the older kids would tell me that Voorhies is the best teacher they have. As a result, I was very excited when I found out the following year that he was going to be my teacher in seventh grade. The class was very enjoyable because there was never a dull moment. There was energy in the classroom while still getting work done.
I wondered if the class would still be the same so I sent out a survey to get some first hand experiences from kids currently in his classroom. 8th grader Jacob Liber, said “In my opinion Mr. Voorhies is a great teacher because he is always keeping every student involved. By keeping everyone involved he makes jokes or calls on them even if they do not volunteer. I’ve had him for about two years now and there is never a shortage of learning in his class. There is always something to do from watching a movie to reading a 3 page passage.”
Jacob wasn’t the only one who enjoys Voorhies for his jokes. Another 8th grader, Asa Lantz, stated, “I like Mr. Voorhies a lot he has became one of my favorite teachers. I think he is very chill and laid back compared to the rest of the teachers. He is very funny and always makes jokes about anything and everything. Overall he is a top 3 teacher that I have this year and I’m very glad I have him.”
By the looks of these comments, it seems that Voorhies is pretty well-liked by his students. Finally, 8th grader Deanna Gruber feels that, “Mr. Voorhies is nice and funny. He jokes around a lot and his work is really easy. He teaches well because of it and I’m understanding history more this year than last year by how his teaching changed. He also has something to say (in a funny version), to every event when he’s teaching that specific event.”
In my personal experience, one thing that stands out the most about my time during Voorhies’ class was a funny and joyful experience. It seems that his students are experiencing and feeling the same way.
I’m glad that most of the students feel the same way towards Voorhies because he definitely has a genuine passion for teaching. He makes sure that everyone in the classroom gets involved and has a good time.
