This year Lakeview families and students have contributed to our community and Poland’s community greatly. The “Dig Pink” Volleyball Game is one of the ways Lakeview has contributed. This game raised awareness and funds for a fellow volleyball family affected by breast cancer. This year the family who was supported was Megan Zimmers and her family. Megan Zimmers is from Poland and she is a survivor of breast cancer.
The Lakeview Volleyball girls helped the Zimmers family tremendously by getting sponsors and people to the game. The whole volleyball game was dedicated to Zimmers and all proceeds and funds went towards her. Many students, families, and businesses came out to support her during this time. At the game, there were also many vendors selling cookies, jewelry, and shirts. These vendors included Kendra Scott, Halo Stax, Yellow Heart Cookie Company, and Jenn Lynn Jewelry. All of these companies and people coming out to support showed the Zimmers family how much we care.
Junior Volleyball Captain Mallory Mailach says, “The pink game went really well! We had tons of sponsors and a great turnout!” Mailach also mentions how she and the team prepared for the game, “To prepare for the game, the team went from business to business asking for sponsors. We also hung several flyers up at the school and promoted the game as much as possible.”
The volleyball team helped out to a great extent in order for the pink game to be the best it could be. They ended up raising over $1,000 for Zimmers. The volleyball girls really made a mark on our community and Poland’s by doing all of this work in order for the Zimmers family to be supported and donated to.
A volleyball was also given to Zimmers which was signed by the volleyball girls in support of her. Not only did the team raise money, but they wore pink jerseys to show the support they had for Zimmers. The school funded pink jerseys for the volleyball team in honor of breast cancer awareness month to support each family that gets donated to each year.
This game was very successful because of the joy it brought to the Zimmers family and even the volleyball players. Freshman Volleyball Player Annaliese DeJulio shares, “I feel very proud that we were able to help somebody who needs it. Seeing Mrs. Zimmers smile and cry happy tears brought me happiness!” DeJulio also talks about preparing for the game and how it affected the volleyball team when she said, “When we were preparing for this game and trying to find sponsors together, it really brought our team together. Not only did it bring our team together, but it brought our community and Polands together by helping the Zimmers family out.”
Many efforts were put into this game by everyone on the team and even fans. Everyone did an excellent job at creating a welcoming atmosphere for the Zimmers family to walk into at the game.
Many volleyball girls felt great knowing that they helped out a family in need including Junior Hallie Capan. Capan shares, “I always look forward to the pink game every year because I love raising money for people in our community or other communities that need it.” Capan also talks about how she felt about helping out the Zimmers saying, “It was bittersweet to see all the achievements we did pay off. Seeing tears of joy fall down from her face made my day because it made me realize what we did for her and her family.”
Lakeview has done many sporting events in honor of breast cancer awareness and to raise money for families who need it like the Zimmers family. Being a part of this made the volleyball girls realize that every effort they put in is appreciated and that the good that they do in communities brings people together.
We wish Megan Zimmers and her family the best of luck! Thank you to everyone who contributed to the “Dig Pink” Volleyball game and everything that was done with the fundraisers was greatly appreciated, and thank you to the volleyball girls who made it a success!
