Every year senior English teacher Carrie Schlatt has all of her senior classes wear a punny costume to school on Halloween. They then parade around the school having students and teachers guess what they are.
In this year’s display, we saw many creative costumes such as Senior Jack Peterson’s “White Trash” costume. For this, Jack held up a trash can and that was it.
Senior Clover Wagner went as a chick magnet. Wagner explained, “While being a chick magnet is basic, it was still funny and multiple teachers still struggled to guess what I was. I had ordered the pieces for my costume way beforehand because I knew from the start what I wanted to be. I ordered a t-shirt with a magnet on it and those chicks that move when you wind them up. Only one of them actually worked but it was still easy and smart. Out of all the costumes I saw on Halloween I really liked Ellie Davies’ punny Halloween costume.”
Senior Ellie Davies was definitely one of the hardest to guess but was also the most clever costume. Davies wore a construction hat and a Friends shirt. Each and every teacher struggled to guess what Davies was, one had even guessed “Hard Headed.” However, Davies was the Friendzone. The friendzone is a common term nowadays because so many people chase after someone who only sees them as a friend.
Another creative costume was a duo costume Seniors Elizabeth Fazekas and Zoe Baker worked together to stump everyone. Fazekas shared, “Mrs. Schlatt told our class we could do group costumes, so Zoe and I decided to do one together. We wanted to do something new, so we looked around for a little while and found the perfect costume. We had decided to do spoiled milk. I needed a jug of milk and Zoe needed to look like a spoiled child. Zoe wore all Lululemon and carried around Lululemon bags. It was really cute and people had a bit of difficulty guessing what we were.”
It is always a lot of fun to see the different costumes and groups. It is also a lot of fun to parade around the school to show the costumes off. Some of the teachers who saw and guessed at the costumes were Mr. Carson, Mr. Murphy, Mr. Shanower, Mrs. Sarko, Mrs. Hogue, Mrs. Bucko, and Mr. Detero. All involved in the guessing struggled, except for Mr. Detero who excelled at guessing each costume.
The mastermind behind Punny Halloween, Schlatt wore bunny ears and a shirt that had dust all over it. Mrs. Schlatt was a dust bunny! Schlatt has always been an oddball in the best way possible, which makes Punny Halloween so much better.
Schlatt said, “I do it because my students work hard and if I can incorporate English in a Holiday I’ll do it. My classes always have fun doing it and I enjoy everyone coming in dressed up, enjoying their day. I will continue to do this until I retire, which is hopefully soon. I really do love to find a time to give my students a break and to do something fun for a change.”
With Mrs. Schlatt’s classes known to be a favorite of most students, it’s safe to say that the students do find Punny Halloween fun and love to dress up. There may be no extra credit for dressing up, but it is a tradition that is safe to stay.
Hopefully, everyone gets a chance to experience Punny Halloween even if Mrs. Schlatt retires. It is a great way to involve students in something slightly educational, fun, and easy for the Holidays.
