It is one of the greatest honors at Lakeview High School to become a member of the prestigious National Honor Society. During the fall of every year, juniors and seniors apply to NHS if eligible. Students must write an essay and a resume for teachers to assess.
The entire teaching staff then votes for students with an impressive academic performance and good character to be tapped. Tapping the students is the action of letting the future NHS members know they have been chosen.
This year, tapping took place in the seventh period on November 7, 2023. Senior National Honor Society members from the previous school year were given white carnations with small congratulating messages attached. The flowers were then handed to the select juniors and seniors that had been chosen to become a part of the esteemed club.
The current member walked around the school, knocking on door to door to hand their flowers to the new members. Publications adviser Angela Sarko walked alongside the members in order to capture the special moments for the yearbook and for the students to cherish and look back on.
When asked how it felt to be chosen for the honor, Senior Clover Wagner stated, “While waiting all day at school, I was pretty nervous about it. I know that becoming an NHS member is a great opportunity and I truly am proud to be welcomed into the National Honor Society! It really goes to show how hard I have been working academically throughout my high school career. I definitely am proud of myself and the rest of my classmates who made it in. I am super excited for the induction ceremony and I am especially excited to see what becoming a member will bring me!”
Many Senior NHS members felt the same way when they were tapped and later on inducted. It was truly interesting to see the roles now reversed.
Senior Dylan Clements stated, “It was definitely different to be tapping the students instead of waiting to see if I had been chosen. I remember being really nervous that I could possibly not have been picked. Now that it was my turn to tap these students, I knew I should let them feel proud of themselves and congratulate them. All of the seniors did a great job in doing that and I am curious to see what projects we will be working on this year.”
Students, staff, and administration at Lakeview take National Honor Society very seriously and encourage our students to apply. It is very rewarding to see students work hard inside and outside of the classroom and then be rewarded for that work and dedication. We choose these students because of their role model behavior and their academic performance. These are the types of students that our eighth graders, freshman, and sophomores look up to. We want to encourage our students to aim high and it is evident that the National Honor Society is an incentive to do so. It is a great accomplishment to see the students Lakeview has raised to become honored members. We are very proud of our current and future members!
The National Honor Society Induction Ceremony will take place November 21, 2023, at 1:30 PM. The entire high school, along with the parents of members, will watch the inductees become official members. The NHS President, Jack Peterson, will briefly speak on what it means to be a member and all of the students will attend a reception afterwards.
Congratulations to Lakeview’s newest National Honor Society members!
