With Thanksgiving around the corner, Lakeview is excited for the upcoming break! Thanksgiving is the time to relax, hang out with friends, and spend quality time with family. This year, Lakeview’s Thanksgiving break is 5 days long, allowing everyone to wind down and enjoy themselves. The break isn’t the only thing the students look forward to, but Black Friday as well! Nothing beats the holiday deals!
One thing that isn’t always mentioned is the annual Turkey Trot! Usually, this event occurs on November 23rd, and gives the community the chance to support local charities! The Turkey Trot is an event that brings people together for a common good, while also allowing volunteers to test their speed! When mentioning the Turkey Trot to junior Jalyn DeLeon, she stated: “Ever since last year, some of the track team, cross country team, and I run in the Turkey Trot! There is one around here, but we do the one in Cleveland. I like that one more because it’s so much bigger and they give you shirts and medals. Everyone usually wears holiday apparel while they run three miles! Overall, it’s just a fun tradition especially if you are a runner.” From this, it is clear that this event is very beneficial, and seems to be a great time for everyone!
Another event that seems to be very popular is the Macy Day Parade! This year, the parade will be held on the 23rd, and should be very interesting. Oftentimes, this parade is broadcast on all types of social media, allowing people all over the world to watch the parade! After asking multiple students about this event, junior Kennedy Bartlett seemed to be very familiar with it! Bartlett said she “always looks forward to watching the parade on TV, not only because it gives [her] the chance to spend time with family, but because it’s interesting and makes [her] feel like a kid again. Getting to watch all the fun floats go by brings back memories from [her] childhood.” Bartlett isn’t the only one who experiences nostalgia, but a lot of fans do as well!
Thanksgiving is a lot more than social events, it obviously involves food and traditions as well. For the longest time, turkey has been the main meal for Thanksgiving dinner. One thing many people may not take part in is the breaking of the wishbone. This tradition originated in Italy thousands of years ago. The Italians believed that chickens had magical powers, which is why turkeys were considered “lucky.” After the turkey is carved, a bone-shaped like an upside-down V is revealed. This is the wishbone. Two people are then chosen to break the bone, and the person who ends up with the biggest side gets their wish come true. Senior Jack Peterson remembers this tradition, stating: “I used to love breaking the wishbone with my family when I was little. It was always a fun competition between me and my sisters. We haven’t done this for the past couple of years, but maybe we will bring it back this Thanksgiving!” From this, there is no question that breaking the wishbone is a key tradition on Thanksgiving.
After all is said and done, Thanksgiving is filled with love, family, friends, and food. Thanksgiving wouldn’t be what it is without the fun traditions that come along with it. Here, it gives people something to look forward to, other than the tasty food and bonding experiences. There are different Thanksgiving traditions everywhere, but it is great that some Bulldogs are taking part in it! All in all, Lakeview wishes everyone a great Thanksgiving this year!
