Lakeview Bulldogs’ 2nd Quarter comes to an end on December 20th and Midterms are that same week. Students worked very hard last quarter to get their desired grades, and they are expected to do the same this quarter.
Lakeview High School principal Lawrence Herrholtz had positive words to say about the school year so far, “We’ve had an excellent school year. It’s been different with the transition from 8th grade coming up to the High School, but I think the transition’s been smooth. I do believe that our hallways are well behaved. I think our students are working hard academically, our clubs and sports are thriving. I’m very pleased with how the school year is going so far.”
Herrholtz gives words of advice for upcoming midterms, “Failure to prepare is a guaranteed failure on the test, which is 10% of a full year course grade. If you calculate both the midterm exam, and the final exam, both of them count for 10%. Combine those two numbers, that’s 20% of your final grade which is ⅕; it’s like an entire 9 weeks grade. So if you look at it that way, it’s an entire 9 weeks grade on 2 tests. You have to prepare in order to get the grades that you desire. Since GPA is coveted by universities, colleges, trade schools, I think it would be in the students best interest to prepare ahead for each exam.”
Herrholtz has a very positive outlook on how he sees the semester ending, “I would like to see the first quarter end with kids being proud of what they did, then take a well deserved break. We used to give exams after break, and kids used to fret during break. Now we take them right before they go that way they don’t have to deal with any type of school over the break, then you come back refreshed, ready start the second semester.”
Lakeview High School assistant principal, Michael Detoro had some encouraging things to say about the start of this school year, “I can’t believe how fast the school year has gone. This first half has been a transition back to the days of yore when the 8th graders were part of the high school. We’ve also had to transition to larger class sizes and fewer overall offerings due to our consistent budgetary issues. With all of that said, I think we have had a very successful first semester.”
Seeing as midterms are coming up shortly, Detoro had words of advice to give students, “The pathway to a solid midterm examination score starts now. Cramming the night before an exam is not going to help when reviewing 80+ school days’ worth of material. Students also need to remember that this grade is worth a significant portion of their final grade. In a semester course, this exam counts for 20% of their final grade. For year-long courses, this exam is worth 10% of their final grade.”
Detoro emphasizes reviewing old material to prepare for midterms, “I would highly recommend studying the previous quizzes and exams. Those assessments often provide a glimpse of what the midterm exam will look like.”
Detoro shares his thoughts on how he would like the quarter to end, “I would like the first semester to end on a positive note for all of our students. I think one of the most important things that we do here at Lakeview is finish the first semester prior to winter break. That way students can go home and enjoy their time away from LHS without worrying about upcoming exams.”
Lakeview High School Guidance counselor, Caitlyn Schnurrenberger surprised on how fast the year is going by, “It is hard to believe we are almost half way through the year – the school year is flying by!”
Schnurrenberger promotes preparation for midterm exams, “First – make sure that you take the time to actually study for each test. I feel students sometimes “blow these off” because they do not understand how much the exam can affect the students final grade. How you perform on your midterm (and final) and have a major positive (or negative) impact on your grade.”
Schnurrenberger adds, “Second – Manage your time. Start preparing now for midterm exams, do not wait for the night before. Make sure you understand what each exam will be covering and make a plan to study accordingly.”
Schnurrenberger has some very encouraging words for students, “I encourage all students to study hard and prepare for their exams. If you put a study plan in place, your hard work will pay off.”
Overall this semester seems to be ending on a great note. All students should welly prepare for midterms and end the quarter with good grades.
