A carefully selected group of Lakeview juniors and seniors got the opportunity to lead fifth graders at Camp Fitch. Camp Fitch is located up near Lake Erie and holds many intriguing activities for the counselors and their groups of fifth graders. These groups of students were selected carefully after an application was sent in. The total of students helping ended up being 14 and some faculty also joined them on their trip. Many of these counselors enjoyed their time at Camp Fitch not only for their fellow counselors and activities but also for the 5th grade students that accompanied them. Many of the counselors had only good things to say about their experience.
Lakeview Senior Dylan Clements said, “My time at Camp Fitch was amazing, it was a great atmosphere and experience. The best part about the trip was spending time with the kids and being able to bond and make memories with them. All of the activities that were hosted were a blast and the kids enjoyed every second of them. Being a role model that the kids could look up to was a great experience.”
Being able to bond and create long lasting memories for not only the kids but also for themselves is outstanding. Being a role model for these kids is one of the most important parts of being a counselor. Many of the campers will remember spending time with the upperclassmen of Lakeview and all the memories they made at Camp Fitch. There were multiple activities at Camp Fitch.
Lakeview Senior Nolan Toth said, “We started by making candles and churning our own butter and then moved on to learning about the history of Lake Erie and explored the beach and that was the end of our first day. On our second day we started by rock climbing which was super fun and then learned about certain reptiles and got a hold of a turtle and a snake. We then went to learn about survival tactics and the kids did their best to create a fire, build shelter, and signal to an overhead airplane to survive. Lastly we road big horses and finished up the trip by learning to make a fire and hobo pies which were delicious.”
As you can see there were many activities that were fun but many others were useful for survival such as learning how to signal overhead to a plane, making a fire, and building sustainable shelter. These traits are all very important skills to know. Lastly, many of the counselors were appreciative of the opportunity.
Lakeview Senior Tyler Hovance, “It was all very fun and exciting. The trip grew on me the longer we were there. It was very fulfilling seeing the kids having fun and enjoying their time.”
While there were multiple activities that both the campers and counselors participated in, the emphasis was on a great learning experience for the campers and the counselors were there to ensure they had a nice and enjoyable time. Counselors made sure that campers enjoyed their time and got what they needed to have a fun trip at Camp Fitch.
Lakeview Senior Tyler Hovance also said, “It was also a great honor to be chosen for Camp Fitch as well.”
Many students applied to become a counselor, but only fourteen were selected. The process was rigorous and well thought out. One of the greater honors at Lakeview is being selected and trusted enough to be able to take care of a group of fifth graders. All of the counselors were very honored at being chosen.
Camp Fitch 2023 was a success! We thank all the staff members, counselors, and of course the campers for making Camp Fitch such an enjoyable experience.
