As 2023 comes to an end, the winter solstice begins creeping up behind us. With that, the LHS Ski Club must begin preparing for the upcoming trips to Peak n’ Peak next month. In January 2024, our Ski Club here at Lakeview will be taking their annual trip to Clymer, New York to check out the slopes. Every Wednesday for four weeks the club will board a charter bus and drive almost two hours to its destination. However, many students say that the long trip is well worth it, and can’t wait for the upcoming weeks of fun.
Junior Michael Nigrin has been a member of the ski club since his sophomore year, so he already has experience traveling with the club and participating in all the activities that are available. Nigrin told me, “I couldn’t be more excited for this year’s upcoming trip to Peak n Peak. Last year I was in Mexico and had to miss the first trip, and I was pretty upset, but I didn’t let that deter me. When I got back, I knew I had the next three trips to look forward to, and they were well worth the wait. I had so much fun with my friends and even made new friends with people I was never really that close to before. Ski club gave me the opportunity to experience something new with my peers and I will always be grateful for the memories I got to make from it.”
Not all students are as familiar with the program and experience as Nigrin, but are equally excited for the season to begin regardless.
Junior Arianna Powell will be attending the trip for the first time ever. Powell said, “Although I have never been skiing before, I couldn’t be more excited to learn. This year has been the first year that it was convenient for me to go. Even though I don’t have as much experience as some of my classmates who are attending, I am taking this as a moment to have fun with my friends, make mistakes- and learn from them. I am confident in myself that I will have no trouble acquiring the skill because I will have tons of people by my side to show me how it’s done.”
It makes no difference how talented you are at the skill, or how many times you have been skiing. It doesn’t matter. All that matters is you are having fun and being safe.
I interviewed one final junior, Gage Woofter, who has gone to every trip since he has been in high school. Woofter said, “Skiing has always been a hobby of mine. I have enjoyed skiing for many years now, even prior to when I was going with the club. However, being a part of ski club has given me the chance to go with a large group of friends, which is an experience I will always cherish. Every year I have participated, I had an amazing time going. Mr. Piper and Mr. Murphy have always done a good job coordinating. Because of this, I will even be attending the extra trip to Lake Placid, New York, over President’s day weekend, which adds to the excitement for this upcoming season.”
Undoubtedly, it is very clear to every student, in any case, that the Lakeview ski club is filled with an incredible amount of fun. I myself even participate in attending the trips, and can contest this fact. As you can see, everyone is beyond excited for this year, and it is more than safe to say that even I cannot wait to see what it brings.
