Lakeview is hosting its annual Winter Spirit Week from Monday, December 11th through Friday, December 15th. The themes for the week are all related to the upcoming winter break, and it serves as an exciting event for the students before they start their midterm exams. This year, the cheerleaders have come up with new and creative ideas, which has generated a lot of excitement within the student body.
Junior Katarina Candor says, “This year, we decided to approach the theme selection process a little differently. Our cheerleaders collaborated with the student body in order to come up with the themes. We sent out a survey to all the grades, including the eighth grade, and asked some questions to gather ideas that the students would participate in. From the survey responses, the top five choices were Family Picture Day (Flannel Day), White Out, Polar Express (PJ Day), Christmas Crazy, and Santa vs. Elves.”
The themes are very unique this year, but that was not the whole process.
Junior Ava Foertch explains, “After we created the themes, the cheerleaders held practice to discuss everything and vote on the best ones. The cheerleaders decided which themes would be most popular and participated. After a long debate, we had to announce the chosen themes. During practice, we made posters to promote them. We wrote the themes and explained each one, and then hung the completed posters on the wall outside the main office. To further spread the word, we decided to include the themes in the announcements, which were read during the first and last period of the day. Additionally, the Lakeview Instagram account posted the themes so students could easily access them as a reminder.”
While the process was not easy, the student body greatly appreciates the effort.
Freshman Luke Demsy says, “I’m excited for my first high school spirit week! We had one for homecoming, but I didn’t really participate. This time, I plan on showing my school spirit. In middle school, the themes were not as creative, so I’m looking forward to the upcoming themes. My favorite theme is probably Santa vs Elves, it may be a basic theme, but it’s fun to see everyone dressed up. I think this is a great idea to take some of the stress off of midterms.”
Every grade seems to enjoy the new take on themes.
Senior Elisa Kotsatos says, “This year’s themes are the best yet! Usually, most of the themes are repetitive, but this year was different. The cheerleaders put in a lot of effort, and it really showed. My favorite theme is probably Pajama Day. I like it because I get to be comfortable at school. Another theme I appreciate is the white-out, which was a respectful tribute to Mr. Clark. This year’s themes are very exciting, and I am eagerly looking forward to participating for the last time!”
On November 29, Mr. Clark, a former substitute at Lakeview, passed away, leaving behind a community, staff, and student body that loved and admired him. In honor of his memory, the students have decided to dedicate Tuesday, December 12th, as “White-out Day,” where everyone is encouraged to wear white. On this day, Mr. Clark’s calling hours will take place at the Lane Family Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM. To help pay for his funeral expenses, a GoFundMe page was created. We hope to see everyone there to pay our respects and honor the life of Mr. Clark.
We hope to see everyone show school spirit and participate, especially on white-out day. Remember to wear your flannels on Monday, December 11th!
