Lakeview’s Boys Varsity Basketball team has fought hard during their 2023-2024 season. One game that specifically stands out was the game played against one of Lakeview’s top rivals: The Champion Flashes. The game was won by the Bulldogs with an impressive score of 66-32.
One team standout, Kyle Senkowitz, had broken a school record during the match. Previously, Lakeview’s record for steals throughout a game was eight. Senkowitz had managed to beat this record by stealing the ball an astounding nine times!
Senkowitz felt “great” after realizing he had beaten the school record.
He stated “It feels really fulfilling to see my name on the board. Having my coaches and teammates congratulating me on this achievement also felt great.”
Senkowitz was asked whether or not he planned on breaking this record while he was going into the game.
He stated “No. Whenever I go into a game, I never really consider scoring a bunch of points or breaking any records. My main focus is getting ready for my game, mentally and physically, and then focusing in on the team’s game plan. We all go into our games with the hunger to win.”
Around halftime, Senkowitz’s number of steals appeared to be promising.
He stated “I had a feeling I had around three or four steals in the first half. Coach said we would ramp up the pressure and go into a trap, meaning my chances of racking up more steals were better. Still, I never planned on breaking the record.”
However he felt doubtful when the game ended.
He stated, “After we were up around 25 at the end of the third coach decided to take me out for the rest of the game. After that I was questioning if I actually had gotten enough for the record. The best part was having some of the staff congratulate me on the record; it is nice to see teachers and staff get involved within our sports programs.”
Senkowitz had left the gym without knowing of his achievement. Later that night, one of his teammates showed Senkowitz his stats. He then realized he had just beaten the Lakeview’ Boys Varsity Basketball record for the number of most steals in a game. He now holds the record for most steals in a game throughout Lakeview history.
While the broken record was the highlight of the game, it was not the only impressive stat Senkowitz had. He had scored 23 points throughout the game, more points than any other single player had scored during the match.
He stated “Many of my points came from transition layups that I got from getting the steals, there was a three or four play period where I had a steal, then layup, steal, and layup. Ramping up the pressure really helped me achieve this record and the game that we had.”
Senkowitz did not go into the game with the expectation to score so many points or have so many steals.
He stated “Obviously, certain teams are more beatable than others. We knew we were the better team and we knew we had better players. When you are the better team with better players you tend to pressure them more. Even though we had more talent we still had to work just as hard to get a win.”
Good luck to Kyle Senkowitz and the rest of basketball team on the rest of their 2023-2024 Basketball season!
