Lakeview Local Schools provide students with many unique opportunities that a lot of nearby schools may not offer. Although we are small, we are encouraged to do big things. This sometimes requires overcoming fears, and learning basic social abilities. Lakeview offers College Credit Plus classes in order to prepare students for the future. The class I would like to discuss specifically is Carrie Schlatt’s Communications class. This class makes students more comfortable with public speaking. On top of this students are given the option to do our daily announcements. At most schools, the principal most likely does the announcements to make sure they are taken seriously. Lakeview prides itself and its students by giving them memorable responsibilities. These tasks are cherished by the Bulldogs, and often taken advantage of before graduation.
The Lakeview Bulldog’s staff allows students to express themselves. Important news, lunch menu updates, the date, and of course the pledge are still done every morning but they are customized to fit the interests of the students. Aside from impromptu announcements, there are two designated times during the school day for students to pause and listen. These are the morning and afternoon announcements.
Schlatt typically puts two students in charge of the morning announcements and two different students in charge of the afternoon announcements. These positions are usually re-assigned each new nine weeks or semester. This year, Juniors Kennedy Bartlett and Molly Stuart started off the day for the Lakeview Bulldogs throughout the first semester.
I asked Junior Kennedy Bartlett: What was your favorite part about doing the morning announcements? Bartlett responded, “The best part about doing the morning announcements was being able to do it with my friend Molly! At first we were nervous to do this, but it turned out to be okay once we were a few days in.”
Following this, Seniors Luca Comichisto and Cooper Schiavone wrapped up the day with the afternoon announcements. The end of the day announcements are slightly different then the morning when it comes to subject matter. Usually, the students will wish everyone a good night or weekend and remind them of any important upcoming events.
Schlatt’s communications class is only one semester long, so after winter break she replaced the former announcers with new students. Currently, the morning announcements are being done by Juniors Griffin Oravec and Mason Wheeler. Along with this, the afternoon announcements were passed on to Juniors Caden Baldwin and Anthony Marble-Salem. These Juniors do a great job of personalizing their message to the school by starting and ending each day with something positive.
I asked Junior Griffin Oravec: What is your favorite phrase to end the announcements with? Oravec said, “I would say that my favorite phrase I have used would to be have a Winston Churchill Wednesday. Even though it was random, I had a fun time saying it!”
Lakeview also has behind the scenes announcers. Both outside and inside the school there are both screens and signs posted to inform the students of events. These are once again taken care of by Schlatt’s class. These students redo the signs and create google slides for inside the building consistently throughout the year, so people can stay up to date!
Lakeview is also one of the few schools who entrust students to write articles like this! We are privileged with platforms that allow us to spread insightful news to others. Not only does the College Communications class present us with an opportunity to talk over the loudspeaker, but our Publications class with Angela Sarko allows us to write to our local community! Due to this, many of Lakeview’s students are uprising public speakers and writers.
