As spring is just around the corner, the Lakeview tennis men’s team is starting to prepare for the 23-24 season. The team is once again coached by a teacher at the school, John Terbovich. Last year, the Lakeview boys tennis team finished the season with a record of 5-10 which was an improvement from the previous year, but we are hoping to do even better for this upcoming season.
This year, there will be 6 returning seniors from last year’s team, including Dylan Clements, Ethan Gavitt, Kyle Somich, Luke Rider, Michael Moats, and Ty Goyzueta. Most of these players are on the varsity team so the Lakeview tennis team will be looking for some new players for the 24-25 season.
When asked what he’s most excited about for this year’s tennis season, Junior Lucas Redmond comments, “I am most excited about our schedule this year. We have a lot of new teams scheduled and I think it will be really fun to play some better teams and teams that will see in our section’s playoff. It will help us improve and get us ready for sections so I am excited.”
As of now, the Lakeview tennis team has a tough schedule this year with a total of 23 matches, which is a big jump from last year, with 15 matches. They will be playing teams like Poland Seminary, Struthers, Niles, Jefferson, Ursuline, Howland, Notre Dame Cathedral-Latin, Ravenna, St. John’s, West Geauga, Edgewood, Harding, and Cardinal Mooney. Winning games this year will not be easy but I am sure the men’s tennis team will succeed.
The men’s tennis team will be competing in the division II Solon sectionals tournament somewhere around the beginning of May. This year, Terbovich scheduled more matches with teams that are in our section to make us more prepared for sectionals. Since we are in the Solon bracket, the teams in our section are pretty far away so it is great that we have matches with some teams further away.
When asked how he’s feeling about his senior season, Senior Dylan Clements comments, “I am really excited for my senior year of tennis because I really enjoyed it last year and it was fun playing doubles. I am mostly excited this year because a lot of the team is made up of seniors and I think we will be pretty good this year”.
With most of the varsity players being seniors, I think the Lakeview Men’s tennis team will be pretty good this year. Tennis is one of the last sports that will finish up before the seniors go off to college so with all of their excitement for after high school, I think they will try to make the most of their last high school sport.
When asked how he is feeling about this year’s tennis season, coach John Terbovich comments, “The tennis team has improved by leaps and bounds over the last couple of years and I anticipate this year we will continue to improve, having a better overall record than last year. We have a lot of returning players and I think that we will see better matches from everyone. I look forward to the season starting and hope to see more people come out to the matches to cheer on the team”.
The Lakeview men’s tennis team will be starting official practices up near the beginning of March, because of the OHSAA ruling, where teams can start official practices on March 3rd this year. With all of our matches and how much practice we will be putting in before and during the season, I think Lakeview will be able to make it far in this year’s sectional tournament, even with the more competitive teams we will be facing there. I am excited to see how this season will turn out.
