On January 25th of this year, Lakeview hosted a skating fundraiser at the Cortland Roller Rink. Students and teachers were able to skate side by side, showing their school spirit by supporting the cause. It lasted from 5-7 pm. Other identical events were scheduled as a result of the success that this one had. All of these events were so kindly set up by the Lakeview Levy Committee in hopes to raise funds for their upcoming levy campaign efforts.
Lakeview High School teachers did a great job of raising awareness for the skating activity. Many of them were found skating or rollerblading down the halls the day beforehand! Continually, they would inform students in passing them, or in their classes.
I attended with some friends to observe the attendants as well as support the cause for a short while. It was clear that the teacher population outnumbered the students, but both students and teachers that were present appeared to be having a good time. I did only go once, so it is highly possible that more students came to the other events.
Joshua Murphy, a chemistry and CCP chemistry teacher, stated, “I only went to the high school event. I thought it was a great event that I would love to see continue to grow each year. Although I did not go to the events afterward, I heard nothing but good things and I was glad to influence at least some students to be a part of this activity.“
From this quote, I observed that there is a possibility for more events just like this one in the foreseeable future. The same students who went so often only a few years ago would look forward to something like this, and it would greatly benefit our school financially.
Another educator at Lakeview High School took the time to give me her perspective on her time at the fundraisers. This was Jamie Miller, a College Algebra and Trigonometry teacher.
Miller claimed, “The K4 staff and students did not disappoint! They showed up in full force, packed the house and skated the night away! Shoutout to our students grades 6-12, who were treated to a surprise as Mr. Murphy, Mr. Piper and Mr. Shanower showcased their skills on skates. These community events serve not only as fundraising endeavors, but also as opportunities to come together outside of the school day! Next time, we hope to see even more of you in attendance! ”
I proceeded to ask her how effective the fundraisers were and how much money was raised.
She responded, “Although I don’t have specifics on the amount raised, I can tell you that both events were a success!”
From these accounts, it can be concluded that the teachers enjoyed their time at the Cortland Roller Rink fundraisers. They even had some fun prior to the events, as they were spreading the word through our school’s hallways.
Students, likewise, appreciate the fundraising method. Junior Hailey Anderson attended the first night with her boyfriend.
She “had a really good time. It was great to go back and see the changes after going so often a few years ago. They took out booths and made a brand new bar with tv’s. They also added some new food to their menu and cool lights. When I heard I’d get to see the teachers skating, I definitely made sure to be there, and we were also glad to play our part in raising money for our school’s cause.”
The enthusiastic attitude of our educators is what led many of the students to participate. A special thanks to them, and thank you to every student who played their part as well!
