On Tuesday, March 12th, the Lakeview Junior class took the ACT together, which was given for free at the school. The ACT took place in the old gym where students took the following parts, English, math, reading, and science. The ACT is meant to measure skills that are most important for success in post secondary education and that are acquired in secondary education
The ACT can help you in multiple ways, even just trying your best. Colleges use ACT scores to place you in the right classes at the correct level. Your ACT score can also help you place out of remedial classes and coursework rather than sitting for additional placement tests on campus. Taking the ACT and trying your hardest can easily save you time and money in the long run if you plan on attending college.
When asked why she has wanted to take the ACT multiple times so far, Sophomore Ali Parise comments, “I have taken the ACT two times already as a sophomore. I made sure to get ahead early to try and get the score I wanted. ACT scores are a crucial part of getting into colleges, especially ones at the higher level”.
Similar to what Parise was saying, doing well on the ACT can open doors for college, like better admission chances and bigger scholarships. Another pro is that some college programs require certain scores. If your program needs a certain score, you have to make sure you get that score. If colleges can only accept a limited number of people and your ACT score is higher, there is a greater chance to be accepted rather than a student with a lower ACT score.
When asked how she felt during the ACT, Junior Hallie Capan comments, “During the Lakeview ACT in the gym, it made me nervous like I always am when taking the ACT. This was my 3rd time taking the ACT and I thought it was alright. It wasn’t too bad but it also wasn’t the easiest one I’ve taken. I wanted to get a good score on my ACT so I could get into a good college. ACTs determine whether or not you can go to a certain college. I must get a pretty good score”.
If you plan on attending college for a sport or want to be recruited by a college recruiter, taking the ACT is essential for your recruiting process. Although taking the ACT isn’t completely required for all colleges, you need an ACT score to be recruited. College coaches often might ask to see your score, to determine whether or not you meet their academic requirements/standards.
When asked what he thought about the ACT, Junior Lucas Redmond comments, “I think the ACT went well for me, and I feel I did alright on it. I think it is great that Lakeview provides a free ACT for us, that we do together at the school. I was able to prepare for this test because of the many practice tests I used, in English class, and on the ACT website”.
Agreeing with Redmond, I also think it is an amazing thing that Lakeview does for its students. Schools don’t have to provide a free ACT that you can take at your home school. When people are taking the ACT on their own, you have to schedule it and go wherever that specific ACT is being held. A lot of the time, they are held at Howland High School, or other similar, local places.
To wrap things up, if you have the opportunity to take the ACT for free, try your best. Don’t guess on all of the questions if you think you are set on not going to college. Things can change. The ACT is crucial for getting athletic scholarships, scholarships, getting accepted into colleges, and more. If you have the opportunity to take the ACT, do not waste it.
