Members of the student body of Lakeview High School were given the opportunity to attend Trumbull County’s event known as Civic Day. Trumbull County hosted their 38th annual Civic Day while three students of Lakeview High School were given the opportunity to attend. The three students, all juniors, were, Lorelai Lowe, Jalyn DeLeon, and Arianna Powell. Civic Day is an event that was hosted this year at the DiVieste Banquet Center. Civic Day is full of students from around the community within Trumbull County, who are interested in careers that involve being public servants or doing public duties. While also full of people from those careers that multiple students are interested in. This event allowed students to experience the real world events, as well as first hand experience that involve the careers of those considered as public servants.
Each student from each school within Trumbull County were split into groups with the public servant participants of Civic Day. The students had the ability to pick which public service duty they wanted to learn the most about. Each of our three students chose different public service acts to learn and experience first hand. Therefore, each student from our student body was able to gain a different experience than the other. This event allowed students to truly see what the life of a considered public servant is really like as they get older and truly decide their desired career.
I asked one of the students that attended Civic Day, Lowe, who described that “Civic Day was eye opening for me. It allowed me to really see what the life being in a public duty career was like. I chose to be with the magistrate because he seemed the most interesting to me, and I also would like to study a career that has something to do with public service as well as the law.” Lowe also went on to explain that her favorite part of attending Civic Day was “attending the banquet and eating the really good food there.” We are so glad that Lowe had some time well spent with the public service workers and got a nice lunch out of it as well!
I then asked another student that attended Civic Day, Powell, who claimed that, “Civic Day was a great experience to be apart of and I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to spend my day with workers who serve the public.” When Powell was asked which group she chose to be in, she says that she “chose the Judge” because he was the most interesting career to shadow at Civic Day. We are so happy that Powell had a great experience at Trumbull County’s 38th annual Civic Day.
The final student that was interviewed was DeLeon, she describes that her Civic Day experience was not the same as the other students who attended from Lakeview. She states that she, “spent her day with Dan Morgan who is a zoning administrator, which most do not know what that is so it became interesting to me.” When she was asked what a zoning administrator was she explained that “they are people who are in control of enforcing and evaluating regulations. In simpler terms they help plan within the city. This was all very new to me so I immediately became more interested in this rather than learn about the world of law like Arianna and Lorelai.” We are so happy that Jalyn stepped out of her comfort zone and learned about something new at the Trumbull County Civic Day.
We are so glad that some of our students got the opportunity to attend Civic Day and learn some first-hand experience from our town’s public servants!
