As we get closer to May, the weather is finally getting warmer and drier. Hopefully, this nice weather will stick for a while so spring sports can play their matches and games. The Lakeview men’s tennis team had a couple of matches recently.
On April 9th, the men’s tennis team played Poland Seminary @ home. Poland has led the NE8 for several years and had a record of 2-0 so far this season. Because of the weather, this match is only partially complete and it’s currently tied, so the Lakeview Bulldogs still have a chance to upset the Poland Bulldogs.
To start the match, the first singles Senior Luke Rider lost his match making the score 0-1. The second singles Senior Ty Goyzueta defeated Poland’s #2 with ease, making the score 1-1. To finish up the singles matches, Junior Colben Schick defeated Poland’s #3 to make the score 2-1.
The first doubles team Senior Dylan Clements and Senior Michael Moats also lost their match, making the score 2-2. The second doubles team included Junior Lucas Redmond and Freshman Benton Beerbower. After winning the first set, they lost the second set which would send them into a tiebreaker. Due to extreme wind conditions and rain, the match was called while it was tied 2-2. The coaches decided they would finish the match when we played Poland again.
When asked how he is feeling about finishing their game, Junior Lucas Redmond comments, “I am excited to finish our game against Poland. All of the pressure is put on us to win but I’m confident we can finish them off. I know we will communicate well so I’m hoping that will be enough.”
On April 15th, the Bulldogs drove up to Ashtabula to play Edgewood. Edgewood has been a very dominant team for the past years, with players making it very far in the playoffs. The Edgewood Warriors ended up taking the match 5-0 contributing to their success this season.
The first match included Lakeview’s first singles, Senior Luke Rider. After taking the first sets in both games, he couldn’t get much more than that. Rider ended up losing 0-2, with scores of 1-6, and 1-6. The second match included Lakeviews second singles, Senior Ty Goyzueta. Goyzueta fought to get a point but unfortunately couldn’t take a set losing 0-2, with scores of 0-6, and 0-6.
The third match included Lakeview’s third singles, Junior Colben Schick. After countless deuce games, Edgewood continued his consistency defeating Schick with 0-2, with scores of 1-6, and 0-6. The first doubles match included Lakeview Seniors, Dylan Clements and Michael Moats. Edgewood dominance continued, defeating Clements and Moats 0-2.
When asked how he felt about his loss against Edgewood, Senior Dylan Clements comments, “This was probably the best we’ve played all year. We tried to keep it close but Edgewood was just the better team.”
The final game of the match included Lakeviews Junior Lucas Redmond and Freshman Benton Beerbower. Redmond and Beerbower won the first set after some close calls. After some retaliation, Edgewood takes the second set tying it up 1-1. After taking another match to a tiebreaker, Redmond and Beerbower were defeated once again 7-11.
When asked how he handles tie breakers, Junior Lucas Redmond comments, “This was the second time out of four games that me and Benton have taken a match to 3 sets. We are always tired after just playing two sets but I’m hoping these experiences will make us learn how to stay confident and get the win.”
