On Tuesday, May 30th, the Lakeview men’s tennis team faced off against St.John school in a match under the lights at St.John. Going into the match, Lakeview had a record of 6-4, their losses being to Edgewood, Cardinal Mooney, Howland, and Poland Seminary. Out of 51 teams, the Bulldogs were ranked 24 in Northeast Ohio, division two rankings.
Lakeview played a double match against St John. They first played an exhibition superset match. Coach John Terbovich switched people’s positions around for the first match because it was an exhibition match. St. John ended up getting the superset win, winning 5-0 after some close matches.
The first match consisted of our first singles player senior Luke Rider. St. John’s #1 singles player dominated the first game, winning 6-1. After a little more fight and multiple sets going to deuce, Rider was defeated again 6-1, losing his match 0-2.
The second match consisted of our second singles player, senior Ty Goyzueta. Early on, St. John’s #2 took a 0-2 lead over Goyzueta. With some close sets, some going to deuce, Goyzueta took the first game 1-0 after defeating St. John 6-2. After regrouping over the break in between games, the St. Johns #2 found his footing, while taking the second game 6-0. With a 1-1 tie, the players then competed in a tiebreaker where the first player to reach 10 points and win by two would get the win. St. Johns eventually got the win, defeating Goyzueta 1-2.
When asked how he felt he did, Goyzeuta comments, “During the first set, I feel like I did pretty well. The kid I played hit the ball hard and had a hard serve. I was able to slice the ball pretty well and deflect his hard shots. The second set got more sloppy but I didn’t do too bad. I’m happy I was able to play a good opponent before sectionals so It could prepare me for the difficult competition I will face in Solon”.
The third match consisted of our third singles player, junior Colben Schick. After continuous back-and-forth sets, St. John eventually got the win 6-4 making the score 0-1. While the sets were tied at 2, Schick was able to pick up the win 6-2 with multiple close sets going to deuce. With the games tied 1-1, the players went into the tiebreaker. Schick was up 6-0 in the tiebreaker, until St. John started to come back. St. John was able to secure the victory after the comeback 11 to 9.
The fourth match consisted of our first doubles team, Junior Lucas Redmond, and Junior Zach Aho. Last year, the St. John’s #1 doubles team made it to state. Redmond and Aho knew it was going to be tough going into the match. After some good serves and hard slams, St. John took the first set 6-2. After multiple games to deuce, St. John eventually took the win 6-1, winning the match 0-2.
When asked how he thought he did against a state qualifying team, Junior Lucas Redmond comments, “Even though we didn’t win, we still did good. We had multiple sets that went to deuce and played well as a team. I’m happy we were able to play a good team like St. John because it made us better players, and got us ready for sectionals”.
The fifth and final match consisted of Senior Dylan Clements and Senior Michael Moats. After some fight from both teams, St. John took the first set, winning 6-2. For the second game, the Bulldogs took more sets this time but still couldn’t get the win, losing 6-3.
In summary, the St. John’s tennis team defeated Lakeview with a score of 5-0. Sectionals are coming up very soon, on Tuesday, May 7th. The Lakeview Bulldogs will be competing in Solon for sectionals against some of the best teams in the state. It should be interesting to see how everyone will do.
