As the Lakeview Bulldogs wrap up another season on the greens, this year’s varsity boys golf team has much to reflect on. The team, consisting of 13 players, took on a challenging schedule against competitors such as South Range, Niles McKinley, Girard, Hubbard, and Struthers. With only one game left to officially close out the season, the Bulldogs are proud of their efforts, particularly in the NE8 Conference under the coaching of Steve Woofter.
Leading the pack is senior Jason DeMonica, a four-year varsity golfer who has been crucial to the team’s success since his freshman year. Averaging an impressive 35 this season, DeMonica has been the team’s standout player, consistently performing under pressure and setting a strong example for his teammates. When asked about his season, DeMonica said, “I’ve put in a lot of work over the years, and it’s been rewarding to see it pay off. Golf has taught me so much about patience and focus, and I’m going to miss competing at this level with my boys.”
Not far behind DeMonica is junior Will Kirila, who has been a rising star with an average of 39.3. Kirila’s consistent play this season has also been important to the team’s success. His skills were showcased when he shot an albatross on hole three at The Links by the Tracks golf course, which is our home course. Senior Ben Schmidt recalls the moment: “Watching Will hit that albatross was crazy work. Three under par on a hole is something you rarely see. It’s one of those moments that will stick with you forever, and it really shows the kind of player Will is gonna be his senior year.”
The team’s third-best player, senior Gage Woofter, has also had a strong season, finishing with an average of 45. Gage, alongside fellow seniors Carson Conrad, Colben Schick, Ben Schmidt, Bradyn Armstrong, and Zach Aho, has been a vital part of the team’s camaraderie and competitive spirit.
Conrad shared his thoughts on the season, saying, “Golf has been such a big part of my high school experience and I’m really going to miss it, but I’m already looking forward to joining a league after graduation. I don’t think I’ll ever stop playing.”
This sentiment is shared by all the seniors on the team. For them, golf has been more than just a sport—it’s been a bonding experience that created lasting memories and friendships. From early morning practices to the competitive matches, the seniors agree that golf taught them valuable life lessons in focus, persistence, and patience.
Schick noted, “Golf is something I plan to keep in my life. Whether it’s competing in a local league or just playing with friends, I’m not ready to let go of this sport.”
DeMonica’s leadership on the course, combined with the strong performances from underclassmen like Kirila and others, has paved the way for a bright future for Lakeview golf. Despite losing a talented group of seniors, the underclassmen are eager to step up and continue the legacy of success.
As the Bulldogs await their final match result, the team can already look back with pride on their season, which included standout individual performances, team growth, and a record that reflects their hard work and dedication. The seniors will leave big shoes to fill, but they’ve undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the program. The team’s dedication and love for the sport will carry on, as they look forward to continuing their golf journeys beyond high school.
Lakeview’s boys varsity golf team has had a season filled with memorable moments, particularly from the seniors who have been integral to the program’s success. From DeMonica’s leadership to Kirila’s albatross and the camaraderie shared by all, this season will be remembered fondly by players and coaches alike. The future is bright for the Bulldogs, and the seniors leave knowing they’ve contributed to something special.
