This year the state of Ohio brought forth a new class that must be taken in order to graduate high school. The class, Industry Fundamentals, was made a graduation requirement in hopes to educate and prepare students for upcoming financial and societal responsibilities.
Here at Lakeview two of our wonderful teachers, Chris Romano and Kendall Werschey, have taken on the challenge of teaching a completely new class. Romano teaches the current senior class of 2025 so the students are able to graduate, and Werschey teaches the sophomore class so they will not have to take the class their senior year. Each student must take the class for one quarter in order to graduate. Let’s see what this new class has to offer for Lakeview.
Senior Brielle Redd is currently taking the class with Romano. Redd highlighted, “I am really looking forward to learning and preparing for life after high school. I am not sure what we will be learning exactly, but with graduation approaching so fast, it is important that we are ready to go out into the real world with life skills. Some students aren’t able to learn these things at home because their parents work long hours or have passed away, so it is very important that the school teaches us about responsibility because not everyone has access to do so on their own. That is why I am thankful that this class became a graduation requirement just in time for my senior year. Even though the third quarter just started, I am prepared to learn and retain this knowledge to carry with me for a lifetime.”
Many students, like Redd, wonder what exactly will be taught in the class. Romano, the teacher for this year’s seniors, stated, “This class is designed to educate students on potential career paths, college readiness and preparation, and works to uncover potential pathways for students after high school. This class is also designed to look at the current issues in society and the economy and how the issues can reflect a student’s life in the future.”
The class will also be helpful for students who are not planning on attending college by providing alternative ideas for career paths. Senior Hailey Anderson does not plan on attending college, and would prefer learning a trade. Anderson stated, “Even though I don’t want to go to college, I still want to find a steady career after I graduate. I started Industry Fundamentals a little over a week ago and I am already starting to get a better understanding of our economy and society. What we are learning about the economy and society is honestly already starting me to decide what to do in the future. I learned it would be beneficial to find a good paying job so I don’t have to worry so much about the fluctuation of the economy as time goes on. I’m looking forward to learning more in this class and I’m glad it became a graduation requirement because it will be beneficial to not only me, but my peers as well.”
Overall, both students and teachers have high expectations for this class. Regardless of what a student is interested in pursuing, Industry Fundamentals will be able to provide students with a wide range of potential pathways and encouragement for all that will come prior to graduation.
Lakeview students are known to be successful and hard working students, which is why there is no doubt that each student taking this class will succeed in life. For the students taking Industry Fundamentals, remember to come to class prepared and ready to learn.
As always, go Bulldogs and good luck on your new class!
