As we move further into the school year, one of Lakeview’s newest classes is proving to be more than just another elective. Wellness, taught by veteran teacher Carrie Schlatt, offers students the opportunity to build a foundation for lifelong fitness and self-care while also learning the importance of mindfulness and gratitude—skills that will serve them long after high school.
Led by Schlatt, a Lakeview Bulldog since 1994, Wellness is more than just another fitness class. The curriculum covers topics ranging from mindfulness and gratitude to the importance of hydration, healthy sleep routines, and, of course, staying active. Students can take this class more than once because it offers a new curriculum each semester.
Senior Ben Schmidt is currently taking the class for a second time and shared his thoughts on the experience. “I look forward to Wellness class every day. Each day is something different so it doesn’t get boring and it’s a great opportunity to exercise while also learning how to take care of your overall health. I’ve got in better shape, learned how to manage my sleep better, and had a lot of fun with my friends. Mrs. Schlatt taught me plenty last semester and I look forward to learning many new things from her this semester.”
The class itself takes a hands-on, engaging approach that sets it apart from other electives. Students typically spend just one day a week in the classroom, completing coursework and assignments. The remaining days are dedicated to physical activity, including two days of weightlifting, a day of yoga or stretching, and a day of games like volleyball or football. These sessions not only encourage teamwork and friendly competition, but also give students a chance to unwind and enjoy themselves in a supportive environment.
With a balanced mix of traditional schoolwork and participation-based activities, Wellness provides a refreshing change of pace for anyone taking it. Students are graded not only on their participation in weekly exercises, but also through tests, projects, and regular assignments to ensure the students understand the science behind fitness. Furthermore, one of the main components of the class is making a personal workout routine, with students creating their own based on their goals and abilities.
The class has received positive feedback from both current and former students. Senior Tylan Nguyen, a former Wellness student, commented on how Wellness left a lasting impression on him. “The activities are fun and exciting, but what really makes the class is Mrs. Schlatt. She brings so much energy and passion, and it creates such a fun atmosphere. You’re learning important life skills while also enjoying yourself.”
The benefits of Wellness extend far beyond the classroom and physical fitness. Students who took the class report an improvement in their fitness, mood and overall health, thanks to the course’s focus on mindfulness and gratitude. By encouraging students to appreciate the small but meaningful things in life, Wellness fosters a positive mindset that many find transforming.
“After my first semester of Wellness, I learned to focus more on the positive aspects of my life, instead of dwelling on the negatives,” Schmidt adds. “Since then, I feel that I’ve been more positive in my thinking and less stressed in general.”
This semester, Wellness is welcoming new students eager to take advantage of its benefits. Senior Gage Woofter, taking Wellness for the first time, commented “I have high expectations. I’ve heard this class is a lot of fun from everyone that took it, and I’m looking forward to getting an opportunity to workout during my school day. I’m ready to get in the weight room and get lifting.”
As the school year progresses, the Wellness class continues to make a lasting impression. Whether through being mindful, or learning the value of a good night’s rest, students are gaining more than just knowledge, they’re building healthier and happier lives. With each lesson on health, fitness, and gratitude, Lakeview’s Wellness Program is teaching students to embrace habits that will serve them well in all aspects of life, now, and in the future.
