Art has a way of bringing people together, and in downtown Cortland, that connection comes to life through Art in the Alley. This unique community event highlights the creativity of Lakeview High School students while turning an everyday walkway into an outdoor gallery. Located in the alley near Pizza Joe’s on Main Street, the display transforms the space into something much more meaningful.
Art in the Alley features artwork created by Lakeview students as part of their final projects. These pieces are painted on plastic-like surfaces and hung along wires throughout the alley, allowing visitors to walk through and experience each piece up close. Last year’s theme, “Outdoor Adventure,” brought a bright and energetic feel to the exhibit. Students painted scenes of summer activities like carnivals, swimming, and trips to the beach, capturing moments that felt both personal and fun. The collection reflected their artistic growth.
This year, the theme shifts to something even more personal: “Landscapes of Trumbull County.” Instead of focusing on general outdoor experiences, students are diving into locations that hold meaning within their own community. From recognizable buildings to quiet natural spaces, each piece will represent a student’s perspective on what makes Trumbull County special. This theme encourages a deeper connection between the artists and their environment, giving them the opportunity to reflect on the places that have shaped their lives.
Junior Art 3 student Anna Haynie shared her excitement about returning to the project. “I really enjoyed the project last year. I thought it was such a fun way to have some artwork displayed in the community! I’m really excited to work with a larger canvas again this year!!” Her enthusiasm highlights one of the most important aspects of Art in the Alley, which is the chance for students to see their work exist beyond the art room.
For senior Camryn Ross, this year’s project carries even more significance. “Having the privilege of displaying my artwork in an outdoor exhibition is a really unique and exciting opportunity. I’m definitely trying to gather ideas related to the local landscape theme, but I’m overall looking forward to seeing what I put on the canvas for the final painting of my high school art career!” As a senior, this event serves as both a final project and a lasting contribution to the community, making the experience even more meaningful.
Art teacher Jeff Piper emphasized the importance of the event not just for students, but for the entire town. “Art in the Alley has provided yet another opportunity for our students to show the public how much talent we have here at Lakeview. This year’s theme is ‘Landscapes of Trumbull County,’ so I’m hoping the community has a strong connection to the work.” His perspective reflects the larger goal of the project which is to build a bridge between students and the community through art.
Beyond being a final assignment, Art in the Alley teaches students valuable lessons about public art and its role in community engagement. It challenges them to think about how their work will be viewed, interpreted, and appreciated by others outside of a classroom setting. It also reinforces the importance of individual perspective, showing that each artist’s voice matters and contributes something unique.
The official event for this year’s artwork will take place on May 21st at 12:00 p.m., inviting the community to come together and experience the display. Whether you’re stopping by intentionally or just passing through downtown, Art in the Alley offers a moment to pause and appreciate the creativity of local students. In a simple alleyway, art becomes accessible, students become recognized, and a community becomes more connected.
