An amazing group of juniors and seniors were selected to guide and help the fifth graders at this year’s trip to Camp Fitch. Camp Fitch is located on Lake Erie and has so many activities and games for the kids to play. Not only did the upperclassman but so did the staff and facility.
The upperclassman seemed to have an amazing time, senior Annabelle Humphrey states, “I had an amazing time at camp fitch, it’s something I have never experienced before. I had so much fun helping out the kids and just overall being so involved in such an amazing activity.”
From the moment we arrived the energy was so high and full of excitement. The kids were so eager to start activities and learn new things. Whether it was wall climbing, arts and crafts or touring the reptile room they were ready to learn and participate and give their best effort in it all. There was a boys cabin and a girls which all of the counselors and kids stayed in those cabins. Waking up early at around 7 every day they would start their days going down to the dining hall for breakfast.
Junior Joey Gillis said, “My time at Camp Fitch was so fun and an experience I’ll never forget. I really enjoyed going down on the beach and looking for sea glass with all the kids. Another one of my favorite things was going to the rock wall. Following that, going to the reptile room was also so interesting. We got to hold snakes and see frogs and turtles. Overall this was an amazing experience and I am so glad I decided to participate!”
As stated above there were so many different activities that were hosted at the camp. Another really fun and interesting activity that was offered was going to the horse stalls and being able to ride them. The kids really enjoyed this, at one point even a pony was brought out that the kids were able to lead around and make jump over a little box.
Beyond the fun activities, Camp Fitch also provided a great environment for the kids to build friendship and develop new skills. Watching the 5th graders support each other during challenges such as the survival task was truly inspiring watching them all work together. Some kids may have even made friendships or hung out with different students they haven’t really interacted with before.
Senior Joss Burkey states, “I had such an amazing time helping the kids and seeing them so happy during all of the activities and challenges it showed me why everyone loves Camp Fitch so much. The energy, teamwork and excitement really made this trip so enjoyable and one I will definitely never forget.”
Being able to make life long memories with your friends at that age is something so fun and unforgettable. To be a part of that is such an honor and responsibility. Being able to teach those life skills and be a role model is something so important and not taken lightly. Teaching kids and helping them is so honoring and such an amazing experience.
Senior MaKenna Doran states, “This was such an exciting trip, some of my favorite parts would have to be the candle making and seeing all the reptiles.”
Overall, this trip was a perfect blend of learning, adventure and fun. Chaperoning this group was so fun and gave me a new appreciation for how important these experiences are for these kids. It wasn’t just a trip; it was a chance for the kids to create memories that will last a lifetime, and I’m so glad I was selected for such a special role.
