Prom is one of the most looked forward nights at Lakeview High School, everyone cannot wait to dress up and dance!
Prom night is one of the most anticipated events of the year for high school students. This is when they get an opportunity to have fun and cherish their memories. However, while attending prom night, students need to ensure that their safety is not compromised. In addition, they must act responsibly during the event. Ensuring the safety of the participants will enable everyone to enjoy their time at the event without any incidents or problems.
Transportation plays an incredibly crucial role in ensuring that prom night is safe for everybody. Numerous cases of accidents occur among teenagers due to distractions and impaired driving. Prior arrangements should be made by students before going to prom to ensure that they know how they would reach prom and go back home. Parents may assist in organizing rides in order to get students to prom. Teens should never accept a ride from drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Texting while driving can be hazardous since it distracts you on the road.
Many schools promote programs that encourage students to stay safe during prom season. One example is SMASH, which stands for “Students Making A Safe Highway.” SMASH programs focus on educating teenagers about the dangers of drunk and distracted driving. Through assemblies, activities, and presentations, students learn how poor decisions behind the wheel can affect not only themselves but also their families and communities. Programs like SMASH remind students that safety is everyone’s responsibility. By spreading awareness, these programs encourage teenagers to think carefully before making risky choices.
Every year at the pancake breakfast SMASH does an amazing job at putting together a wonderful presentation talking about all the safety precautions we must practice in order to have a good time at prom and after prom.
One of our SMASH members Camryn Ross put together a presentation talking about all the safety measures to take on this night.
Ross states “I would say that being mindful about your own and others safety at prom is incredibly important and it’s crucial to make good decisions on the night of prom to protect you and your friends. Anything can happen tonight and we only want the best to happen.”
Parental involvement is crucial to ensuring that prom night is safe for everybody involved. Good lines of communication between parents and teens can help establish some of the guidelines that are expected to be followed during the night. Issues such as curfews and means of transportation can be sorted out ahead of time. The fact that students know there are concerned adults in their lives may encourage them to seek assistance in case they find themselves in an unpleasant situation.
Another one of our SMASH members Isabella Isenberg talks about the importance of prom safety and how there are so many ways to prevent it and end up having an amazing time!
Isenberg states “Prom is a time of celebrating and dancing, it is supposed to be such a fun time where everyone gets together and dances. But it can easily turn into a not fun one if not done carefully. We want to make this prom fun and very memorable, and we are all capable of doing that in a precautious and safe way and still have so much fun”
It is important to recall Prom Night as one of enjoyment and fun rather than horror. Responsible decisions and proper preparation will guarantee a memorable night for all the participants through the implementation of programs such as SMASH. It is crucial that during prom night all students return home safely and remember their prom with satisfaction and pride.
Let’s have an amazing and fun time at prom this year! But let’s do it in the safest way possible! So everyone can come home safe and happy. Prom is a time for fun, not accidents!
