As winter arrives, many sports are about to be in full swing, including indoor track. This indoor track team comes together to build strength and speed as they strive toward their goals. Whether they are at practices or at meets, these athletes show their drive and passion for this sport. On those winter afternoons, the Bulldogs are usually found running the hallways and in the weight room, using this season to ultimately help their speed and form before outdoor season begins.
Even though the team may be small, these athletes are guided by Coach Sean Voorhies, who strives to build their strength while also encouraging confidence in them. He believes that each athlete on the team has the strength to achieve their goals. Practices usually consist of drills, strength exercises, etc., allowing these athletes to build endurance and power while practicing indoors.
Each runner has different ways to prepare for this season. Each athlete has different motivations and methods to help them get where they need to be. Some athletes rely on encouragement from their teammates, while others focus on workouts or personal records they would like to beat.
Sophomore Annalise Lowe states, “I’m looking forward to being able to train early on in the season with my teammates and always having them encourage me to work my hardest as we all push each other. I will prepare for this season by practicing with my teammates to help build confidence in my running.”
For Lowe and other athletes, indoor track is not just about the practices and training; it is also about having teammates around them to encourage them to be the best athletes they can be.
When it comes to indoor track, it isn’t just about practicing and competing; it is also about having a game plan to accomplish their goals throughout the season.
Junior Noah Engle goes into detail about his goals this season and how he will accomplish them: “This indoor track season, I am looking to expand on everything I have already accomplished. I am looking forward to running with all the people I have known for such a long time and to the competition that will present itself this season. This season, I’m preparing with a lot of working out and running daily to have the best success for this track season. The goals for this year are to break the 60-meter and 200-meter dash indoor track records and hold the record in those events.”
Having these strategies to reach their goals is how Engle and the rest of the team will continue to get stronger throughout the season. Engle consistently focuses on sprints such as the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash, where every step he takes can make the difference between an ordinary race and a record-breaking one.
Even though indoor track is not always the most well-known sport in high school athletics, the team at Lakeview High School still find things to look forward to, enjoying the season while also preparing to be successful. These Lakeview athletes compete in events ranging from short sprints to long-distance events, giving runners of all strengths a chance to compete.
Sophomore Kendall DeLeon states, “I am looking forward to indoor track because I want to get faster and see how much I can improve this season. To get ready, I’ve been running regularly, adding some strength work, and trying to stay consistent with my training.”
DeLeon and others have a lot to look forward to this season and are excited to reach their goals, not only to improve as individuals but also to help their team as a whole.
Through their coaches’ guidance, their team strength, and their drive for this sport, the Lakeview Bulldogs indoor track team is more than just a group of athletes; it is also a family. As they begin to train for their upcoming meets, what stands out the most is not only their resilience for this sport, but also the encouragement they spread to each other. Despite being in small numbers, this team is stronger than ever in its pride and encouragement. As their first indoor meet is right around the corner, the Bulldogs are eager to see their hard work pay off and prove that a small team like theirs can make an impact.
