Varsity head coach Nate Solak and Junior Varsity head coach John Pugh start their first season representing the Lakeview Bulldog pride. They aim to spark the beginning to a new era, while bringing knowledge from past coaching positions. Love for the game and a desire to build relationships with their players is a priority, this coaching staff is committed to making the program progressively better.
Coach Solak’s dedication to shaping young minds and athletes goes beyond teaching skills; it’s about building meaningful connections and inspiring growth. As he builds relationships, he also strives to grow as a coach, driven by a mindset of always wanting to learn.
Coach Solak comments: “I wanted to become a coach and a teacher because I love building relationships with my students and athletes. I like being someone that can impact the life of the next generation. Growing up, my biggest role models were teachers and coaches, including my dad, and I always wanted to be someone like that for others… I love learning more about the game everyday and relaying my knowledge to the players so that they can fall in love with the game like I did.”
Due to coaching against Lakeview in previous seasons, Solak was eager and excited to apply for the head coach position when it was available. Having been exposed to Lakeviews talent, he believed he could offer the missing pieces this program needed.
Reflecting on his reason for pursuing this new opportunity, Coach Solak states, “I applied for this position because I had previously coached against Lakeview. I was aware of the talent that goes through this school, and was very excited when I was awarded the opportunity to be the head coach of Lakeview. I believe I am the best fit for this position because I want to build something at this school that lasts for a long time, and I believe that this program needs consistency.”
Coach Solak not only looks to help his athletes grow as players, but as young adults who carry valuable characteristics such as discipline, gratitude, and work ethic. These traits not only strengthen them right now but also beyond high school, ultimately preparing them for more than just basketball.
“I would like this team to appreciate the moment and use it to work hard everyday. They will not be able to play high school sports forever, and they should cherish and make the most of this experience. This is a skill and mindset that translates to the real world: living in the moment and always working hard,” said Solak.
Alongside Solak, Junior Varsity Head Coach John Pugh brings support and a different perspective to the program. Entering his first season with the Bulldogs, Pugh brings valuable experience, a deep understanding of the game, and a commitment to player development.
Reflecting on his role, Pugh states, “As an assistant coach I support Coach Solak by having his back on decisions that he makes, always being prepared for practice and having things in place in advance for the practice to run smoothly, as well as staying in constant communication to ensure we are on the same page on everything within the program… I also contribute by bringing experience and knowledge of the game and an ability to teach the game to the players helping to make us better each and every day.”
While these Bulldogs are working hard to build a growing program, they rely on the energy and support of their fans. So come out and cheer on your boys’ basketball team this season!
“They are improving as the year goes on and we will be much improved over the course of the year,” Pugh adds, “The team would love to see more people from the community out to support them and both home and away games. Most importantly, there are high quality people invested in this program right now- these are not just good basketball players but really good young men.”
