Senior Mallory Kurtz, Current Drama Department President, longtime Bulldog and honor roll student is taking her final bow after four years of dedication, growth, and unforgettable memories at Lakeview. As graduation approaches, Kurtz reflects on her journey from a timid freshman to a confident leader, preparing for her next big stage.
Looking back at her freshman year, Kurtz admits there is one thing she would change. “If I could go back to my freshman year, I would take every opportunity that I could.” she shared. “I feel like I missed out on so much because I was scared.” That perspective has shaped her senior year, inspiring her to embrace every “last” and make the most of every moment.
Throughout her time at Lakeview, one teacher has stood out as a daily source of positivity and encouragement. Kurtz credits Mr. Voorhies as her Lakeview superhero. “For my entire senior year I have had him twice a day” she explained. “These classes are always the highlight of my day because of how fun and enjoyable he makes all of my classes.” His energy and dedication helped make her final year even more memorable.
When asked about the senior event she was most excited for, Kurtz did not hesitate: the musical. Having been involved with Lakeview’s Drama Department since the beginning of her freshman year, this final production of “Ranked” carries special meaning. “It will be extra special this time because it will be my last show” she said. For someone who has poured her heart into the stage for four years, this closing curtain is both bittersweet and thrilling.
Mallorys favorite in-class memory came just this past December. After finishing all of her CCP classes, she spent the day in the CCP lounge with Mallory Petrick and Maya Figueroa. “We played games in the CCP lounge all day,” she recalled. It was a simple but perfect memory celebrating hard work, friendship, and the freedom that comes with accomplishment.
To show the impact Mallory has on people around her, Seniors Mallory Petrick and DJ Godfrey shared words on what she means to them.
Petrick stated how, “Mallory and I are a package deal. We have been best friends since kindergarten and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Along with having the same name and hair color, we also share a sense of humor, and when we are together (Which is pretty much always) we are most likely laughing. She has brightened my life in such a huge way. I am so proud of her and I cannot wait to see where she goes next!”
Godfrey expressed that, “Mallory Kurtz has been a long time friend and a great person to work alongside in clubs and councils for the past years. She has taught me new perspectives on problem solving and has been an amazing person to grow up with and learn from. A favorite memory between us would have to be spending hours in the band room printing marching band music, dancing and singing along to our playlists as we sorted music for what felt like days!”
Outside the classroom, her proudest achievement came last spring when she was elected President of the Drama Department. “This was something I had been working toward since my freshman year” Kurtz shared. “It was amazing to have accomplished it.” The role reflects not only her talent, but her leadership, dedication, and love for the program she has called home throughout high school.
If Kurtz could pass down one piece of wisdom to the students following in her footsteps, it would be simple: “Do whatever will make you happy.” It’s advice rooted in experience, and a reminder to take chances, step into the spotlight, and not let fear steal opportunities.
As she prepares to leave Lakeview behind, Kurtz knows exactly what she will miss most. “I am going to miss the teachers that have made me enjoy learning and look forward to going to class” she said. The relationships she built with supportive educators helped shape her from student to a future educator through encouragement and inspiration.
This fall, Kurtz will begin her next mission at Bowling Green State University, where she plans to major in Inclusive Early Childhood Education. “I am beyond excited to start this chapter of my life!” she shared. With her passion for leadership, heart for others, and dedication to making a difference, there is no doubt she will continue to shine in this new adventure.
Congratulations, Mallory, on an incredible four years at Lakeview. The curtain may be closing on this chapter, but your next act is just beginning.
