As the Class of 2026 prepares to close one chapter and begin another, Lakeview High School continues to give the spotlight to students who have helped shape the school community in meaningful ways. Senior DJ Godfrey is one of those students. Known for their leadership and dedication both inside and out the classroom, Godfrey has spent the last four years building strong friendships, taking on challenges, and leaving a lasting impact on Lakeview High school, through academics, band, and involvement.
Looking back on their high school experience, Godfrey says one of the biggest lessons they wished they had understood as a freshman was how important it is to slow down and appreciate the present moment, saying, “High school went so fast, I wish I could have appreciated the small things more.”
Like many seniors preparing to graduate, Godfrey has realized just how quickly everyday moments become memories, making the friendships and experiences they gained at Lakeview even more meaningful.
Throughout their years at Lakeview, Godfrey has grown into someone willing to step into leadership roles, even when not feeling prepared. They explained that one of the greatest “superpowers” they have gained is learning to be ahead, saying, “to be proactive and a leader even when I am not one hundred percent sure I am ready.” That willingness to take initiative has shaped much of their high school experience and helped them grow both academically and personally.
One activity that especially stands out to Godfrey is their role as one of the Lakeview Band librarians alongside fellow senior Mallory Kurtz. What may seem like a small responsibility became one of the most defining and memorable parts of their high school journey.
Godfrey shared that the experience taught them valuable lessons about organization, teamwork, and communication, while also creating countless memories throughout all four years of high school. Their involvement in the band as a whole became an important part of their identity at Lakeview and gave them a strong sense of community.
Godfrey gives much credit to Math teacher Jamie Miller, who was one of the teachers that made a major impact on them during their time at Lakeview. Having her as a teacher for two years allowed Godfrey to not only grow academically, but also develop a deep appreciation for her patience and teaching style.
When speaking about Miller, Godfrey adds, “I don’t think anyone in the world could make me understand the complex math that she teaches in one sitting, but she can,” they joked, “She is super patient and kind, making math enjoyable and fun.” Her support helped Godfrey gain confidence in difficult subjects while continuing to challenge themselves in advanced classes, which is true Bulldog attitude.
Outside of academics, some of Godfrey’s favorite memories come from the friendships and experiences that made high school unforgettable. One memory that still makes them laugh happened during a girl’s golf team trip to South Range. After the bus made a wrong turn behind a barn, they ended up taking a rather dusty shortcut through a cornfield. Although chaotic, Godfrey says it became one of those moments everyone will remember for years because of how unexpected and hilarious it was.
Another memorable and top favorite experience for Godfrey was making crepes in Madame Hartley’s French class. They enjoyed learning about French culture in a hands-on, immersive way, appreciating the experience and how much their teacher put into their lessons.
As graduation approaches, Godfrey says they will miss the consistency and the people at Lakeview the most. Explaining the community, Godfrey states, “Everyone at Lakeview is so kind, and they are always trying to learn your name or remember small details about you. The students all work together, and we can function as a great community. That kind of bond and group of people is so rare to find.”
Ensuing graduation, Godfrey plans to pursue an Aerospace Engineering degree while participating in Air Force ROTC in college. Their goal is to eventually work in the Air Force as a plane or in-flight engineer.
Excited for the future ahead, Godfrey approaches this next chapter with confidence, saying, “There ain’t nothing to it but to do it.”
Through their leadership and involvement, DJ Godfrey has made a meaningful impact on Lakeview High School. As they prepare for graduation, there is no doubt they will continue to accomplish great things in the future. We wish you good luck, DJ!
